Exploring the old Japanese streets of Southern Higashiyama in Kyoto. Higashiyama is one of the main sightseeing districts in Kyoto, where you can walk along old Japanese streets and see old wooden "machiya" town houses. It's also very busy and touristy! Gion is the geisha district of Kyoto, an area with old streets and traditional Japanese wooden houses (machiya). It's absolutely beautiful, and my favourite of the old areas of Kyoto. Gion is also the area of Kyoto where you have a chance of spotting a geisha. It's where the geisha tea houses and theatres are, where the geisha and maiko live and work. I've heard it's a magical place to explore in the evening and at night time. Gion is also home to what my guidebook said is "the loveliest street in the whole of Asia" - Shirakawa-Minami Dori, which you can see in the video. In the late ‘70s, Metabolist architect Kisho Kurokawa (designer of the Nakagin capsule tower) dreamt up “a hotel for 2001”. The idea was to do away with rooms and implement simple crawl spaces for sleeping. Today the capsule hotel concept is well-known in Japan. Originally popularized by businesspeople who missed the last train, these sleeping pods have been given a sleeker makeover. Located near Kyoto’s Gion (the traditional geisha district), 9 Hours has re-developed the capsule concept befitting the iPhone generation: the pods are minimal, functional and easy to use (thanks to the icons on the walls and floors). The *faircompanies family spent a night in these affordable ($40/night) pods and found these sleep crawl spaces (220 cm long by 108 cm wide and high) surprisingly spacious (e...
Vegetarian ramen (and meat ramen!) in Kyoto Station at Taishoken. TIPS FOR BEING VEGETARIAN IN JAPAN: https://youtu.be/x7PXiMf0OwM The 10th floor of Kyoto Station is full of ramen restaurants. I was really surprised to stumble across one that had vegetarian ramen, which is really unusual in Japan. Most ramen noodle dishes contain dashi (fish stock) or have meat (pork) based soup, but here the stock is vegetarian. They also serve regular meat ramen, and the restaurant was founded by the inventor of tsukemen (dipping noodles). The restaurant is Yamagishi Taishoken, on the 10th floor in Kyoto Station (a couple of branches elsewhere in Japan too, including Ikebukuro in Tokyo): https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g298564-d3779996-Reviews-Taishoken_Kyoto_Ramen_Koji-Kyoto_Kyoto_Pre...
Join me and my 240km ride from Nagoya to Kyoto and Osaka, where I stop a couple times along the way to meet with various friends. My old cycling teammate from Michigan was traveling in Japan with his son, so I met him in Kyoto for a bit, showing them around some of Kyoto's popular attractions, before moving on to continue the rest of my ride from Kyoto to Osaka. I finished my ride to Osaka, but wasn't meeting my friend there until the next day, so I camped by a nearby river with my hammock, and took a nice "bath" in the river. I was really tired from my lack of sleep and long ride, so I quickly passed out, only to be awoken by some people doing their morning "radio exercise" (ラジオ体操) by me, which was then followed by rain. I took shelter under a nearby bridge, then grabbed some breakf...
Visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine at day and night when it's dark! The highlight of our Kyoto trip, and one of the best things we did in Japan. Fushimi Inari Shrine is a stunning Japanese shrine in Kyoto, with thousands of red tori gates. As well as visiting the main shrine buildings, you can walk up the mountain on a pathway through the gates. It's an amazing experience, and absolutely beautiful. Fushimi Inari is also free to visit, and the walkway doesn't close so you can go late in the evening when it's quieter and less touristy! Japan, like the rest of the developed world, has taken a serious shine to online shopping. 3.9 billion home deliveries were made in 2016 alone, and that volume doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Japan's wholehearted embrace of online shopping is fueled, in part, thanks to the country's efficient shipping infrastructure, in which next-day delivery is the norm. Hit the streets in Japan and you're bound to spot uniformed men and women delivering packages by truck, scooter, bicycle, and on foot with speed and dedication that may surprise those from other countries. But the ever-increasing number of packages is putting strain on these workers and the logistics that support them. On this edition of Japanology Plus, we take a look at the system as it exists and some of the new ideas that wi...

Kyoto, Japan, has long been considered one of the country’s most beautiful cities. Once the capital of the nation, Kyoto is now an ultra-modern haven that retains a great deal of its ancient charm. To see some of this long-established glamour, make your way to Kyoto Tower. Just two miles east of the tower is Gion, an entertainment quarter and home to many of Kyoto’s famous geishas. As you walk east through Gion, you’ll find even more old architecture, including several Ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns. Many date back to the Edo period, which ranged from 1603 to 1868. During your Kyoto tour, take a rickshaw ride to the Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka districts, where cars are prohibited and traditional teahouses and temples adorn the nearby landscape. Kyoto is known as “The City of Ten Th...

There are a million things to do in Kyoto, but these were my personal favorites from my time in the most historical city in Japan. Here are my 10 best things to do in Kyoto: ** The most important advice I can give is to wake up as early as possible, I mean super early. 1. Rent a bike - this is the best way to beat the tourist traffic in Kyoto. --- 2. Bamboo Forest - Small forest in the neighboring area of Arashiyama. --- 3. Fushimi Inari Shrine - It is literally a mountain of hidden shrines, symbolic figurines and a seemingly never-ending pathway to spiritual enlightenment. --- 4. Ninja Dojo Class - Kyoto is the cultural mecca of Japan, and while you’re here its good to get a taste of that - be it fact or folklore. --- 5. Kyoto Samurai Experience - As you’ve seen in last week’s video...
Copy the trip we took on Odigo! https://www.odigo.travel/trips/57526db469702d66aa680f00 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/odigotraveljapan Kyoto is the number one travel destination in Japan, and because there are SO. MANY. things to see there it can be hard to figure out where to go. These are our three recommendations for first-time visitors: Kiyomizu-dera, Arashiyama (which is also where Tenryu-ji is), and Gion and the nearby street Shijo Dori + Yasaka shrine. Fushimi Inari Taisha is probably one of the more famous areas, but for us it was SO crowded that it was difficult to even get around. It kind of just made me feel sad because you could tell how incredibly beautiful and almost magical it would have been hundreds of years ago, but with the crowds today it was just about impossible t...

Amanohashidate sandbar is an off the beaten path place you can visit when travelling to Kyoto. Kyoto is one of the top destinations people travel to when coming to Japan, however with more and more tourists coming in each year and going to the same tourist spots, it's hard to enjoy Kyoto without having to be surrounded by crowds. So, if you are like me and you want to enjoy travelling away from the big crowds then try going to Amanohashidate in the northern part of Kyoto.
